My wife Jeannine and I own and operate the Alps Boulder Canyon Inn, a country inn located in Boulder Canyon just west of Boulder. Our inn has received the highest ratings and awards by travel organizations, writers, magazines and newspapers. See www.alpsinn.com.
Prior to opening the Alps, I founded and ran INTELstore, a technology consulting and systems integrator. We were industry pioneers in both local area networking and bar coding. Our clients included Coors, IBM Boulder, Storage Tek and many more of Colorado's top 100 businesses and manufacturers. I sold my interest in INTELstore to build the Alps Boulder Canyon Inn in 1990.
In 1999, Governor Bill Owens appointed me as Public Trustee for Boulder County . With my knowledge of information technology and systems we created custom software solutions and computerized our office. We have improved document turn-around from up to a two-month backlog, to less than 48 hours, and with a smaller staff. Our office now serves as a model for the state.
With over 28 years of small business experience, I am known as an advocate and spokesman for small business. I currently serve as Treasurer on the Executive Board of the Boulder Hotel and Motel Association, and Internet chair for the Distinctive Inns of Colorado. I have been a Trade Mission Ambassador in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan for the Boulder Convention and Visitors Bureau and for American Rockies a regional marketing organization.
Through our business, I have been active in the Boulder Chamber of Commerce, the Boulder Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Boulder Hotel and Motel Association, Distinctive Inns of Colorado and American Rockies. We are members in the Colorado Restaurant Association, Colorado Hotel and Lodging Association and the Professional Association of Independent Innkeepers.
In addition to my many business interests, I have worked hard as a conservation and environmental advocate. I have served on the boards of the Boulder chapter of Trout Unlimited, and the Colorado Arts and Crafts Society (a historic preservation organization). My wife Jeannine and I, and our business the Alps are well known for our regular contributions to Boulder County's arts, schools, and non-profit organizations.
I have spent my life in Boulder County and am a third-generation Coloradoan. I was born in Boulder and attended Boulder Valley (Boulder) and St. Vrain (Longmont) public schools. I graduated from Niwot High School in 1975 where I served in student government as Senior Class President. At the University of Colorado, I majored in Environmental Design (Architecture) and International Marketing. I also spent two two years studying Oceanography and Marine Biology at the Florida Institute of Technology.
When I was 8, my parents moved from South Boulder to rural Boulder County, 2 miles South of Longmont. My brothers and I grew up on Gaynor Lake. We spent our summers swimming, sailing, water-skiing and exploring and winters skating and playing hockey.
My father built homes in Longmont during the 60's and 70's. My grandparents farmed North of Boulder around Lagerman reservoir. Their farm is now a Boulder County park.
Growing up I stacked bales and worked odd jobs on our family's farm, later I worked as a laborer for my father's home building business. I started my first business, Commercial Landscape Management, at age 15. I successfully operated that business during the summers until I finished college. My wife Jeannine and I have been married 11 years. Our daughter Alexis, marks four generations in Boulder County. We have our dog Maggie, and cats Sid, S.K. and Kadida.
